A few design features for our hillside custom home.
Our clients wanted a clean modern presentation of the traditional Mediterranean home style. So we developed the exterior design of the new home with clean simple lines and traditional detail elements for the building structure. The main entry tower was really the only element that was designed with additional stuccoed Quoin-styled columns. Which also reflects a French Provencal design element.
The Building Site
The hillside building lot in Whittier has a dramatic property slope from the front of the property to the rear property line. The view though, is spectacular with weeping willow trees, and to the valley beyond. With these hillside grade conditions, Myles McKenzie designed the new residence with a large lower Garage and a circular driveway approach.
The Proposed Floor Plans
Lower Floor
The inhabitable square footage of the lower level is 327 sf. The space is info the continuous staircase for all floors of the new residence. Additionally, there will be storage room space and an elevator that will travel for all three floors. The garage space is a spacious 1080 sf. Large enough to house 4 cars total with 2 cars by tandem style parking.
First Floor
On the first floor level, which is the main floor level that can be entered from the street has a grand hall entry with a double-radius staircase. The grand hall presentation is very traditional. Additionally, there are also two large bedrooms with their own baths and walk-in closets. Access to kitchen number one and living room is also accessible from the grand hall.
A very large open living space is where the open secondary kitchen, dining area, and great room are located. Also, we have designed a large two-way wet bar with under-cabinet coolers. The wet bar accordion window system opens up to a large 8-foot wide opening with exterior seating at the wet bar.
As illustrated, a large corner door system, which allows and opens up an indoor-outdoor living environment, is so applicable to the Southern California lifestyle.
Additionally, this space opens to a large open deck space that wraps around a beach deck entry to the infinity edge half-round pool. The half-round pool will have spectacular valley views from within the infinity pool space. Additionally, the pool structure is elevated quite high off of natural grade by a series of multi-wall terraces.
The inhabitable space of the first floor is 3294 sf.
Second Floor
For the upper second-floor level of our hillside custom home design, we have designed a large master bedroom suite with multiple open upper decks with climbing vines for natural coverage. Along with a smaller deck and a Juliette balcony, which is off the master bath. All of which, is right off the grand hall and its double-radius staircase.
Additionally, there is a secondary master suite that is oriented with spectacular valley views. The second floor’s great room has its own balcony deck, that overlooks the pool and deck area below, also beyond the valley views as well.
The inhabitable space of the second floor is 2547 sf.
The new residence was designed for one family. But the family has a son with his own family that also will reside there. So each level provides great space and privacy for each individual group of the family.
