Thru the years at Myles Nelson McKenzie Design, we have enjoyed working with a variety of construction building materials. Our contemporary mid century home design was for a project site in Phoenix Arizona.
For the structure we wanted to use a masonry material rather than using the traditional building method of wood framed walls and exterior siding or stucco. So for the masonry product, we chose to use a heavy aggregate polish face CMU block for the exterior walls.
Frank Lloyd Wright had used the same material for a few of his desert project designs in the greater phoenix area. For example the Harold C. Price Sr. House is a great example of a mid-century designed home with CMU masonry block The Mayo Clinic in Phoenix Arizona also used a beautiful polished face CMU block for the dining hall structure at their hospital. Its such an appropriate building material to use against the harsh desert environment.
We really like the exposed polished aggregate stone in the concrete masonry block. A custom designed see-thru square masonry block pattern was designed specifically for our garage to residence breeze-way and our residence entry walls.
A few details of the Phoenix-CMU Block Mid Century Home Design
The custom Mid-Century home design from Myles Nelson McKenzie Design is a two story split level home design. The main living room, dining room, kitchen and laundry room are on the main floor level with two side entrances. One from the front entry and office. The other from the open breezeway from the 3 car garage. A partially enclosed tall patio area is located in front of the living room and second floor loft area. Its designed to protect the inhabitants from the heat of the desert sun.
Because of the very tall and large two story open space in the main floor living area, their a spiral staircase that leads to the loft that is above the living room. The loft has it’s own exterior second floor covered deck space.
The bedroom wing is sunken into the earth a few feet that provides tall room heights. Each bedroom is a master suite style design with it’s full bath and walk-in closet.
Working with so many home styles and materials, its always interesting to try another building process, you learn so much!
