Affordable housing is a necessity for all communities. At Myles Nelson McKenzie Design, we have designed an affordable housing complex using metal shipping containers. The complex is for an acreage property in Renton, Washington state. The proposed location is just 25 miles from the city core of Seattle and 15 miles from Bellevue, Washington.
With the large proposed property, further metal shipping container housing clusters and parking can be added for future development.
Site Plan
Floor Plans
The initial proposed design consists of 10 housing clusters, 30 units in total. Each housing cluster has three stackable units. Which are based on reusable 9′-6″×20 High cube metal shipping containers.
An ADA-designed housing model has been developed for the ground level of each cluster. All three units in the housing cluster will have their own bathrooms. Additionally, each unit will have an electric hot plate, microwave, and under-the-cabinet refrigerator. The second-floor and third-floor units will also have balcony patio space. Either covered or uncovered.
Exterior Elevations
For the exterior elevations, we have kept the design simple and clean. The housing clusters will also easily be conducive to the Pacific Northwest weather environment. The painted steel exterior structure will make the housing clusters easy to maintain.
Each unit will also have heating and cooling utilizing high-efficiency mini-split ductless systems. Rooftop solar panels have been added for additional clean energy.
