Our clients, who reside in Paso Robles, California, were searching for a new custom home design to accommodate their growing family. After discussing several options, we suggested a classical period home style, such as the classic style of Spanish Colonial Revival.
Considering the casual Southern California lifestyle and climate of the Paso Robles area, we recommended the Spanish Colonial Revival home style. It’s a perfect fit for the region and our clients’ needs.
During the early 1990s, Myles McKenzie had the unique opportunity to closely examine the hand-drawn plans created by renowned architect Wallace Neff. Myles McKenzie was granted access to study the design and construction plans housed in the Huntington Library archive. Which is located in the city of San Marino near Pasadena, California. The Huntington Library archive is renowned for its extensive collection of rare and valuable documents, including artwork, manuscripts, and books. He meticulously studied Neff’s plans, gaining valuable insights into the architect’s design philosophy and methods. This experience was an exceptional opportunity and gave him a deep appreciation for preserving architectural history and heritage.
Mr. Neff’s architectural style was influenced by the Spanish colonial architecture he had studied in Spain. During his time, he was once considered one of only a couple of architects developing the Spanish Colonial architectural style in California. This home style was then referred to as the “California” style.

Spanish Colonial Revival Features
First Floor
Inspired by some of Mr. Neff’s projects, a new concept design was developed for our clients. As per the plan, the first floor of the proposed building will have a generous area of 2063 square feet. Perfect for accommodating diverse functional spaces.
The grand entry hall is designed to be spacious and welcoming, providing a charming setting for visitors and guests. The living room is set to be comfortable and cozy, ideal for relaxation and entertainment. The dining room was planned to be a sophisticated and elegant area that opens to a large outdoor terrace, perfect for outdoor dining and socializing. The front terrace will provide an expansive and scenic view, making it an excellent place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors.
The rear half of the first floor has ample open space for the family room and chef-style kitchen, perfect for hosting gatherings and culinary creations. Large French door sets allow natural light to flood the space, creating an inviting and warm atmosphere. The office or study space on the first floor can also be used as a guest bedroom. Offering versatility and convenience for your living arrangements. The rear patio off the kitchen and family room is also an area for enjoying coffee in the morning. The two-car attached garage is 645 square feet, providing plenty of room for vehicles and additional storage. The custom home design caters to everyday living and special occasions.

It has all the desired amenities, including a private bathroom, a walk-in closet, and ample natural light.

The Custom Home Design Exterior Elevations
The defining exterior characteristic of a Spanish Colonial Revival home is the smooth trowel-finished stucco. Exposed roof rafters and beams, simple classic wrought iron for all second-story balconies, and the classic round clay tile hand-stacked roof.
